Sew your own packing cube

How to Sew a Packing Cube

A packing cube is a compact bag designed to organize and compartmentalize clothes in your luggage while also compressing them to maximize space efficiency. They make great gifts and are a simple sewing project that even beginners can tackle.

Welcome to Our Tutorial!

You’ve probably found this blog post because you received our packing cube kit in your countdown calendar. Your kit contains everything you need to get started—just add thread! If you’d like to make a second packing cube or don’t have a kit yet, you can purchase the necessary supplies through the links provided below.

What’s in Your Packing Cube Kit?

Each kit contains:

Let’s Get Started

We followed the instructions from the video tutorial by Sew Very Crafty to sew our packing cube. You can choose to follow the video for the standard size or use the measurements below to create a larger packing cube using the full 40” zipper.

Materials and Measurements for the Larger Packing Cube

To make a larger packing cube, cut the following pieces from the mildew-resistant woven fabric:

  • 12” x 12” (base)
  • 4” x 46.5” (side)
  • 4” x 2.5” (larger zipper tab)
  • 2.5” x 5.75” (smaller zipper tab)

You’ll also need to cut a 12” x 12” piece of sport mesh for the top of the bag.

Follow Along with the Video Tutorial

Watch the video tutorial by Sew Very Crafty below to guide you through the process:

Alternatively, you can follow Sew Very Crafty's blog post for this tutorial, which can be found here.

The mildew-resistant fabric can fray so we recommend finishing your seams with a zig zag stitch or serger.

Happy Sewing!

We hope you enjoy making your packing cube.
