January and February 2020 Sewing Workshops

We are looking forward to kicking off the New Year with a whole lineup of new sewing workshops and, of course, our fabulous Sale Events. With just a few days left for Christmas Shopping – consider giving a Workshop Gift to a sister or friend! You can pay for you and a friend to attend a workshop and we’ll send him/her a special Christmas Card from you and OSF. Details will be included in the on-line registration form.

Here’s the line-up of upcoming workshops:

  1. “My Design” Drawstring Backpack, Saturdays, Feb 22 & 29, 10:00 am – 1:00 pm (rescheduled from January 4 & 11, 2020)
  2. Pouf Making Workshop, two Saturdays, Jan 18 & 25, 10:00 am-1:00 pm
  3. Pattern Drafting Leggings Workshop, two Saturdays, Jan 18 & 25, 2:00 pm – 5:30 pm
  4. Hoodie Workshop, two Thursday evenings, Jan 23 & 30, 5:00 pm to 8:30 pm
  5. Intro to Embroidery and Decorative Mending, one Sunday morning, Jan 26, 10:30 am – 1:00 pm (FULL)

#1. “My Design” Backpack

Let’s kick-off the year by making a beautiful,one-of-a-kind backpack using home décor designer fabrics. You won’t find this backpack anywhere else!

Date: Two Saturdays, February 22 & 29 (rescheduled from January 4 & 11, 2020)
Time: 10:00 am  – 1:00 pm 
(two sessions, 3 hrs each)

  • Instructor: Denise Jones Chu, Hello Beautiful
  • Skills: Student will have some general sewing experience
  • Equipment/Supplies: Bring your own basic sewing kit (scissors, seam ripper, measuring tape, straight pins—we also have supplies in the workshop area)
  • Domestic sewing machines will be provided in the OSF Shop. Students are welcome to bring their own sewing machine to the class, if they prefer.
  • Cost: $110. Registration fee includes:
    • All pattern pieces and sewing instruction to make the backpack body, lining, drawstring and closure
    • $5.00 in-store credit for each student which can be used to purchase fabric to personalize your backpack design. OSF has lots of designer sample fabrics to choose from in coordinating colours and patterns. Students are also welcome to bring their own fabric from home, if desired.
      (Please note that the $5 fabric credit is only valid for use during this class)

#2. Pouf Making Workshop

Join us on two Saturday mornings and learn how to make this beautiful Pouf for your tired feet! Once you’ve assembled your gorgeous Pouf, you can stuff it with fabric scraps from your sewing projects—keeping textiles out of the landfill is a good thing…

Date: Two Saturdays, January 18 & 25, 2020
Time: 10:00 am  – 1:00 pm
(two sessions, 3 hrs each)

  • Instructor: Denise Jones Chu, Hello Beautiful
  • Skills: Student will have some general sewing experience
  • Equipment/Supplies: Bring your own basic sewing kit (scissors, seam ripper, measuring tape, straight pins—we also have supplies in the workshop area)
  • Domestic sewing machines will be provided in the OSF Shop. Students are welcome to bring their own sewing machine to the class, if they prefer.
  • Cost: $110. Registration fee includes:
    • All pattern pieces and sewing instruction to make the bias tape, piping, assembling the pouf, inserting the zipper closure and creating the inner bag liner
    • Cording for piping around the top and bottom of the pouf
    • 22” Zipper for bottom closure
    • Fabric for inner bag liner and for the base of the Pouf
    • Drawstring and toggle stop for the inner bag liner
    • $5.00 in-store credit for each student which can be used to purchase fabric for the Pouf cover. OSF has lots of designer sample fabrics to choose from in coordinating colours and patterns. Students are also welcome to bring their own fabric from home, if desired.

#3. Pattern Drafting—Leggings Workshop

Learn how to draft your own leggings pattern and make a pair of leggings custom fit for you! Perfect for layering with tunics and dresses or wearing casually to workout! Learn techniques for sewing with knits. Lycra and stretch knit fabrics, suitable for leggings, are available for purchase in the OSF Shop.

Date: Two Saturdays, January 18 & 25, 2020
Time: 2:00 pm  – 5:30 pm 
(two sessions, 3.5 hrs each)

  • Instructor: Denise Jones Chu, Hello Beautiful
  • Skills: Students will have some general sewing experience
  • Equipment/Supplies: Bring your own basic sewing kit (scissors, seam ripper, measuring tape, straight pins—we also have supplies in the workshop area)
  • Students will trace the leggings pattern from a master and then adjust the paper pattern using their own measurements. The student will then cut the fabric using the customized pattern pieces. Students will leave with the modified pattern and a pair of custom-fit leggings.
  • Domestic sewing machines will be provided in the OSF Shop. Students are welcome to bring their own sewing machine to the class, if they prefer.
  • Cost: $110, Class size 8—10 students.

#4. Hoodie Workshop

Who doesn’t need a cozy hoodie made from fabulous hoodie  fabrics at OSF!  This is a great two lesson course suitable for male and female students. This course is designed to teach you how to sew with knits while attaching a hood, sleeves, and pockets on knit fabrics.  You will feel confident with the new techniques learned during this course and become a fearless knit expert. 

Date: Two Thursdays, January 23 & 30, 2020
Time: 5:00 pm  – 8:30 pm 
(two sessions, 3.5 hrs each)

  • Instructor: Tanja McAffer, Sewcial Patterns
  • Skills: Student will have some general sewing experience
  • Equipment/Supplies: Bring your own basic sewing kit (scissors, seam ripper, measuring tape, straight pins—we also have supplies in the workshop area)
  • Domestic sewing machines will be provided in the OSF Shop. Students are welcome to bring their own sewing machine to the class, if they prefer.
  • Students will trace the hoodie pattern from a master and then adjust the pattern using their own measurements. The student will then cut the hoodie fabric using the customized pattern pieces. Students will leave with the customized paper pattern and a sewn hoodie.

#5. Intro to Embroidery & Creative Mending Workshop (FULL)

OSF is delighted to welcome the lovely folks from the Vancouver Guild of Embroiderers for an Introduction to Embroidery Workshop.  Learn about the trendy art of creative and decorative mending and how embroidery has made a comeback into the creative arts.

Date: Sunday, January 26, 2020
Time: 10:30 pm  – 1:00 pm 
(one session 2.5 hrs)

  • Instructors: Members of the Vancouver Guild of Embroiderers
  • This is a beginner workshop but all levels are welcome
  • Students will be provided with kits including fabric, needle, embroidery floss and some embellishments to create a small hoop project suitable for hanging.
  • Cost: $45. Class size: 10-12 students.

#6. Begin to Sew Workshop

Join us for two Saturday mornings and we will help you to get comfortable using a sewing machine! In these two classes, you will learn how to thread the machine, create basic sewing stitches, marking and cutting fabric, cutting out pattern pieces and you will gain the skills needed to create your very own project. Students may choose to make a pincushion or tote bag.

Time: 9:30 am  – 1:00 pm
(two sessions 3.5 hrs each)

  • Skills: Student will have some basic sewing experience
  • Equipment/Supplies: Bring your own basic sewing kit (scissors, seam ripper, measuring tape, straight pins—we also have supplies in the workshop area)

#7. Pattern Drafting from Ready-to-Wear Workshop (FULL)

Have you ever wanted to re-create a favourite top, leggings or skirt? Bring your garment and our instructor will guide you through the steps to DRAFT a pattern and SEW a simple garment.

Date: Two Saturdays, February  1 & 8, 2020
Time: 1:30 pm  – 5:00 pm 
(two sessions 3.5 hrs each)

  • Instructor: Denise Jones Chu, Hello Beautiful
  • Skills: Student will have some basic sewing experience
  • Equipment/Supplies: Bring your own basic sewing kit (fabric and paper scissors, seam ripper, measuring tape, ruler, pencil, eraser, fabric chalk, straight pins, masking tape or invisible tape)
  • Students will create a pattern from a ready-to-wear garment of their choosing and then use the pattern to cut out and sew a garment. Students may wish to bring a few garments to review with the instructor to determine which garment would be most suitable for the workshop. Pattern paper provided.
  • Domestic sewing machines will be provided in the OSF Shop for the class. Students are welcome to bring their own sewing machine to the class, if they prefer.
  • Cost: $110. Class size: 8-10 students.
