Eastside Culture Crawl – Our Social Fabric Workshops, November 14-17

 

Our Social Fabric is a happy to be a Bronze Partner for the 23rd Annual Eastside Culture Crawl! We are offering five sewing workshops (including kids sewing classes!) during the four days of the Culture Crawl. We will also be offering Drop-In Community Art projects for all ages.

3. “Beginner Sewing for Kids—Dolphin Stuffy” Saturday, November 16, 11:30 am—1:00 pm (for kids in Grade 3 and up) $35
4. “Machine Sewing for Youth—Drawstring Backpack” Saturday, November 16, 1:30 pm—3:00 pm (for kids with some machine sewing experience) $35
5. “Intro to Quilting—Take Away Potholder” Sunday, November 17, 12:00 pm—3:00 pm $45

Cross Body Art Bag Session #1, Thursday, November 14, 4:30 – 8:00 pm
Join us for an evening of creativity – learn how to make a one-of-a-kind Cross Body Art Bag using a Stitch and Slash technique. Your instructor will guide you through the process of layering multiple fabrics, stitching bias patterns and slashing through the layers creating interesting and intricate designs. All materials will be provided (you get to choose your favourite colours!) including options for the bag strap and loop/button closure.

  • Instructor: Denise Jones Chu, Hello Beautiful
  • Skills: General sewing knowledge and experience using domestic sewing machines
  • Equipment/Supplies: Bring your own basic sewing kit (scissors, seam ripper, measuring tape, pins etc)
  • Domestic sewing machines are available for use in the OSF Shop.
    Students are welcome to bring their own sewing machine to the class, if they prefer.
  • Cost: $55 for 3.5 hr workshop, all materials provided.

REPEAT: Cross Body Art Bag Session #2, Friday, November 15, 4:30 – 8:00 pm

Beginner Sewing for Kids—Dolphin Stuffy, Saturday, November 16, 11:30am—1:00 pm
(for kids in Grade 3 and up)
This workshop is geared for children who are beginner sewers and would like to learn some basic skills in a fun and supportive environment. Kids will have fun picking out fabric for their Dolphin Stuffy, be guided in cutting out pattern pieces and will learn a few basic stitches including the running stitch and securing knot. Kids will leave with a new cuddly friend.

  • Instructor: Tanja McAffer, Sewing Educator
  • Skills: No skills required but a desire to learn would be helpful
  • Equipment/Supplies: All equipment and materials will be provided
  • Cost: $35 for 1.5 hr workshop

Machine Sewing for Youth—Drawstring Backpack, Saturday, November 16, 1:30am—3:00 pm (for kids in Grade 3 and up)
This workshop is geared for young people who have some machine sewing skills. 
Kids will choose from a selection of cotton fabric patterns, learn basic machine sewing techniques to construct a beautiful and functional draw-string backpack.

  • Instructor: Tanja McAffer, Sewing Educator
  • Skills: Some previous machine sewing skills
  • Equipment/Supplies: Kids may use some of the shop tools but we encourage kids to bring their own sewing kit if possible (scissors, measuring tape, seam ripper, pins etc)
  • Cost: $35 for 1.5 hr workshop

Intro to Quilting—Take Away Potholder, Sunday, November 17, 12:00pm—3:00 pm

Have you always wanted to make quilt but not sure where to begin? Join us for an introductory course on quilt making presented by members of the Vancouver Quilters Guild. You will be guided through the process of fabric selection, an overview of quilt patterns, using rotary cutters and quilt rulers, piecing, joining the quilt layers together and edge binding.

  • Instructor: Vancouver Quilters Guild Sewing Instructors
  • Skills: General sewing knowledge and experience using domestic sewing machines
  • Equipment/Supplies: Instructors will provide all tools and supplies needed for the project.
  • Domestic sewing machines are available for use in the OSF Shop.
    Students are welcome to bring their own sewing machine to the class, if they prefer.
  • Cost: $45 for 3 hr workshop, all materials provided.
