Since our start-up in 2009, Our Social Fabric (OSF) has been diverting textiles destined for the landfill. In 2016, OSF diverted SEVEN TONS (that’s 14,000 lbs) of textiles! Half of this came from industry and half came from the many recycling-dedicated private individuals in our community.
In 2017, OSF diverted ALMOST 10 TONS (19,523 lbs) of textiles from the landfill (this is an increase of 37.5% from 2016!)
We accept donations of clean unwanted fabric, related materials (such as upholsteries), trimmings and notions from designers, manufacturers, the film industry and individuals. Textiles are sorted by volunteers, priced and set out for sale. Our customers include home sewers, small business owners, sustainable fashion designers, costumers, artists and members of our creative community. Prices are very affordable and currently all proceeds help to pay for rent and business expenses. In 2017 we launched a number of community initiatives including scholarships for design students interested in recycling and upcycling and assisting elementary school teachers with teaching aids for their recycling and craft projects.
