1. Re-Love Your Wardrobe

Is your garment out of style, too tight, too loose, doesn’t fit properly, needs to be longer or shorter? Maybe you’d like to combine a few pieces to create a fresh new up-cycled look. We can help you re-vamp and re-size your wardrobe – give it a new life!

Date: Thursday, October 17 & 24, 5:00 – 8:30pm

Instructor: Denise Jones Chu, Hello Beautiful
Students may wish to bring a few garments to review with the instructor. There will be opportunities for personalized consultation with the instructor as well as design collaboration with the group.
Equipment/Supplies: Bring your own basic sewing kit (fabric scissors, seam ripper, measuring tape, ruler, pencil, eraser, fabric chalk, straight pins, masking tape or invisible tape)
Domestic sewing machines are available for use in the OSF Shop.
Students are welcome to bring their own sewing machine to the class, if they prefer.
Cost: $110—2 sessions, 3.5 hrs each.  Class size is limited to 6 students.

2. Sew What…

Are you stuck between a placket and an invisible zipper? Are your pattern instructions confusing? Do you have a project that’s half finished and you need a little guidance? Not sure if you need to interface or having trouble insetting a zipper? This sewing session will help you gain confidence and give you the tools to complete your project.

Date: Saturday, October 19, 9:30-1:00 pm

Instructor: Denise Jones Chu, Hello Beautiful
Skills: Student will have some general sewing experience.
Equipment/Supplies: Bring your own basic sewing kit (fabric scissors, seam ripper, measuring tape, ruler, pencil, eraser, fabric chalk, straight pins, masking tape or invisible tape)
Bring the project that you need help with including the pattern, fabric and any notions as noted on your pattern package
If you wish, bring a second, smaller project which can be also worked on, if time permits.
Cost: $55—one session, 3.5 hours. Class size is limited to 10 students.

3. Invisible Mending – Repair Your Knits

Learn how to mend your favorite knit garment or that special sweater from your Mom or Dad.
Roz can teach you to repair your sweater or knit garment in a way that is almost invisible (and sometimes is.) Using a weaving technique and wooly nylon thread you can repair your moth holes and disintegrating seams on most knits. Bring a sweater or two to the workshop and we will take you through the steps of ‘invisible mending’ for sweaters, knit t-shirts and even nylon hosiery.

Date: Sunday, October 27, 10:30-1:00 pm

Instructor: Roz McNulty, Fashion Innovation Centre
Students may wish to bring a few garments to review with
the instructor. There will be opportunities for one-on-one consultation with the instructor as well as group teaching sessions.
Domestic sewing machines are available for use in the OSF Shop but this course will focus primarily on hand sewing
Bring a basic sewing kit (scissors, seam ripper, needles etc)
Cost: $40—1 session, 2.5 hrs. Class size: 12 students.

4. Pattern Drafting—Leggings

Learn how to draft your own leggings pattern and create a pair of custom fit leggings made just for you! Leggings are perfect for layering with tunics and dresses or wearing casually to workout! You will also learn techniques for sewing with knits. Lycra and stretch knit fabrics suitable for leggings are available for purchase in the OSF Shop.

Date: Saturday, November 2 & 9, 9:30am—1:00pm

Equipment/Supplies: Bring your own basic sewing kit (fabric scissors, seam ripper, measuring tape, ruler, pencil, eraser, fabric chalk, straight pins, masking tape or invisible tape)

OSF Sale Event, Thursday, October 10, 2pm-8pm

Trick or Treat – it’s that time of year when creatives everywhere are scrambling to whip up costumes for friends and family members. We have what you need for Halloween!
Our Social Fabric is Vancouver’s only non-profit textile recycling initiative – going strong after 10 years and still diverting tons of fabric from the landfill!

Halloween Specials!
Are you decorating your kids school cafeteria for Halloween? Do you need meters and meters of inexpensive black fabric but you don’t have a lot of money? You’re in luck – just for Halloween we have bolts of black, light weight knit, perfect for capes, draping on walls and trees (for that oh, so, creepy effect) little witches and vampires, table cloths, leggings, and whatever you can think of. The best thing about this knit is of course the price $2/meter AND you don’t have to serge or seam finish the edges, just cut and go! Check out the witchy beauty, her dress and cape lining are all made with this black knit.

Costume / Halloween Fabrics
Our feature table will be filled with fabrics perfect for little goblins, princesses, Mortisha Adams and family members, and the ever popular vampires – lots of fabric bundles are 50% off the regular price so get them while they’re here. Oh, and bundles and bundles of tulle in a rainbow of colours for all you ballerinas and dancing queens!

Coating / Coat Weights
Our table of coat weights and wool/wool blend coatings has been refreshed with lots of new prints and weaves – time to start thinking about Christmas gifts or maybe a long-overdue winter coat for you or that someone special.

Fleece
A new stock of fleece is ready for you to turn into great Christmas stockings, hoodies, and soft toys. Maybe you and your sewing group would like to make fleece mittens and toques for the homeless or grab some of our MEC technical fleece and turn into blankets for the folks in our DTES.

Cotton Prints
Quilters and crafters will love our new arrivals of cotton and cotton blends – lovely for quilting, items for your craft sale, produce bags and napkins…find them in the Wovens section.

OSF Sale – Sunday, Sept 29, 10am-1pm

Hello everyone!  Hope you all are enjoying this frisky Fall weather…don’t know about you, but I just want to make friends with my sewing machine at this time of year and make cozy things to wear and squishy cushions to curl up with!

COAT WEIGHTS AND WOOL
Cozy up to our coat weight table and enjoy the variety of wool and wool blends just waiting to be turned into vests, jackets and maybe even a snuggly coat for your puppy! Lots of colours and patterns – find them in the Wovens section.

TECHNICAL
We keep finding more stashes and donations of Technical Fabrics – lots of different weights and sizes, some are waterproof, some water resistant – all great for jackets and back packs. Lots of folks are making small zipper “”stay-dry” pouches and fold-over pouches with technical fabric for when they go out running, boating or even kayaking.

HOME DECOR
We can’t wait to share all these beautiful contemporary prints with you – our mannequin is all decked out with a reversible tote bag and lunch bag – easy to whip up and so stylish :)

BATTING AND FLEECE LINING
Missed the last sale/ no worries, we have more fiberfill and outerwear fleece in two meter packages. We also received a humongous bolt of upholstery batting which is thicker and sturdier than regular batting – sold by the meter – see our volunteer at the cutting table on Sunday. Need some thinner poly batting for quilts – we’ve got that too!

VINTAGE
Are you into retro fashion? Do you love to revamp your clothes for a one-of-a-kind funky look? Come and check out our crazy assortment of newly arrived vintage fabrics – awesome patterns and colours. All vintage fabrics are just $2/meter!

Let’s Get Technical!
We have a huge selection of Technical Fabrics including “pack” fabrics, durable, water resistant and waterproof, sturdy technical canvas fabrics, light weight stretch wovens and coat weight technicals. Lots of different colours and weights to choose from. The days will be getting shorter and harder for drivers to see runners and kids at night – why not make a bright green jacket or backpack and make your loved ones more visible in the evenings.

Coat-Weight Polyester Fibrefill
Lots and lots of coat-weight fibrefill specially designed for jackets, coats and outerwear – comes in a variety of weights (40 to 200 gsm) PrimaLoft, Microdenier Mid Loft and PrimaLoft Gold. This fiberfill is great for coat linings and could be used for stuffing soft toys and squishy cushions.

1. Pattern Drafting & Sewing from Ready to Wear

Have you ever wanted to re-create a favourite top, leggings or skirt? Bring your garment and our instructor will guide you through the steps to DRAFT a pattern and SEW a simple garment.

Date: Saturday, September 14 and 21, 9:30am – 1:00pm

  • Instructor: Denise Jones Chu, Hello Beautiful
  • Skills: General sewing knowledge and experience using domestic sewing machines
  • Equipment/Supplies: Bring your own basic sewing kit (fabric and paper scissors, seam ripper, measuring tape, ruler, pencil, eraser, fabric chalk, straight pins, masking tape or invisible tape)
  • Domestic sewing machines are available for use in the OSF Shop.
    Students are welcome to bring their own sewing machine to the class, if they prefer.
  • Students will create a pattern from a ready-to-wear garment of their choosing and then use the pattern to cut out and sew a garment. Students may wish to bring a few garments to review with the instructor. Pattern paper provided by OSF.

OSF Sale – Sunday, Aug 25, 10am-1pm

Hello everyone!  This sale event, our donations are all about “Shades of Coral and Pink“!

SILK
One lovely bolt of coral silk came our way and we knew you’d love it. What a way to end the summer dressed in soft pinks and corals. There’s also a a few meters of soft yellow. (limit of one bundle per customer)

PINK VELOUR 
Two bolts of luscious cotton/lycra velour came through the door this week – vibrant pink and rich red. This velour coordinates well with our in-stock leggings lycra!  Cotton velour is so comfy, flows beautifully – makes lovely skirts, flowing dresses and even hoodies and sweaters. Check out the lovely outfits we made in the shop when you come on Sunday.

LINEN
Missed the last sale event? Not to worry, we received more linen in this week’s donation. Two baskets of cream, white and other colours are available (limit of one bundle per customer)

HOODIE and YOGA TIES
Planning on making a hoodie or yoga pants for your weekend adventures? Check out our high quality selection of cotton ties with bonded ends in black and gray. We also have stretch ties in black for yoga pants – all ties vary in lengths from 112cm to 150 cm. If you need to shorten the ties, we have toggle ends in a variety of colours in the notions section.

OSF Sale Event, Thursday, August 15, 2pm-8pm

Hi everyone,

This time it’s all about texture! Join us this Thursday, August 15th between 2 and 8pm for a touchy-feely Sale Event. There will be lots of “oohing” and “aahing” and much fondling of fabrics.

Leather and Vinyl
We received quite a few pieces of medium sized, light weight leather hides in warm and cool colours including a few pieces of natural chamois leather. (Limit 2 per customer for the leather). Included in this donation is a fabulous assortment of good quality vinyl; pieces are large enough for bag making or jackets—available in a variety of colours, textures and weights.

Linen, Naturals and Wool
More “touchy-feely” natural fabric—check out the baskets of linen, wool, wool blends, cottons and rayons down the centre aisle.  Don’t forget to visit the knits section for more naturals including cotton knits—stay “cool” baby!

Faux Fur
Now this is some major  “touchy-feely” – check out a table full of faux fur—tons of textures and colours, realistic looking fun furs and the outrageous for those special occasions – Hallowe’en beasty anyone?

Quilting Cottons and Bundles
They’re back—lovely quilt bundles, all colour coordinated and ready for you to whip up into a quilt square or cushion topper. Check out the rolls of quilting cottons to complete your project!

Customer Appreciation
