WOOL & WOOL BLENDS
It’s hard to think about cooler Fall and Winter temperatures in the middle of this HOT summer, but you do need to start thinking about what you’re going to wear next season. We don’t want to pull the wool over your eyes (LOL), so we’ve decided to pull all of the wool out!  We have baskets full of wool and wool blends at the front of the shop. A variety of weights, colours and prints, you’ll have a hard time deciding how many to get!

SLOW STITCHING COLLAGE
Our mini bundles of home decor samples are perfect for creating wall hangings, journal covers and cushion covers. Check out our latest creation using an oversized embroidery hoop. Mini bundles are located in the Home Decor section. The sample was made using three packages of mini bundles ($1 ea), some remnant trim, vintage doilies, buttons – some machine piecing but mostly hand stitched together.

BUTTONS
Our button racks are bursting with beautiful buttons, tremendous assortments of colour and size.  If you’re looking for dramatic chunky or wooden button for your new wool coat, you’ll find some baskets on the wool tables as well.

INTERFACING
We don’t always have a lot of interfacing in the shop, but we do have a basket full of various types in the Home Decor Section.  We also have interfacing on the bolt that can be cut by the metre, all you have to do is ask for it.

NOTIONS
You never know what treasures you are going to find in the Notions Pod!  We have been working hard pricing all kinds of new notions for you.  From bias tape to buttons, elastic to embellishments, snaps to suspender clips and twill tape to toggle stops.  Ask us if you don’t find what you’re looking for.

OSF Sale Event, Thursday, July 18, 2pm-8pm

Hi everyone, it’s been a long time in between sales so, let’s get this show on the road! Thank you to all you wonderful and sustainably-inspired folks who have donated their textile treasures to Our Social Fabric – we’re delighted to share them with the world!

Quilting Cottons
OMG – we are fully stocked with all the colours of the rainbow – so many pretty prints, I want to take them all home! And with those pretty prints, lots of coordinating broadcloth for quilt backings, summer tops and shorts. Get ’em while they last :)

Patterns
Boxes of new patterns have arrived and ready for some summer sewing. All the patterns have been re-organized and now all together on one wall in the Notions Area – thank you volunteers for your hard work and for keeping us organized! Check out the kids patterns, home decor and craft patterns and even a wee section for the men and boys.

Quilt Samples
We still have a few quilt sample pieces left from our last sale – I was so inspired by all the beautiful patterns that I sewed a few remnants together and had enough to upholster the wing-back chair in the corner of my bedroom – it’s such a lovely comfy spot now to curl up with a good sewing book. For the back panel I used a piece of lilac quilting cotton in a tiny floral design.

Lycra and Premium Active Wear Samples
A couple of boxes arrived from a local active wear designer filled with a wide range of samples including heavy hoodie fleece, soft stretch lycra, knit terry, rib knit, brushed fuzzy knit and some stretch technical. Shades of gray, charcoal, steel, pewter, black, moss green and more… also, lots of regular stock lycra in summer colours of white, teal, orange, navy blue, and taupe.  Still time to whip up a few pairs of capris or a zipper jacket for the summer.

Over the weekend we hosted a “Zero Bag Sewing Bee” at our OSF Shop – we invited students from our sewing workshops and some new volunteers anxious to learn more about zero waste sewing. Click here for photos and story.

OSF Zero Tote Sewing Bee, July 13, 2019

At Our Social Fabric, we believe in living and working sustainably. A few years ago a few of us got together to design a tote bag that would be cut and sewn without (or very little) fabric waste. Our “Zero Bag” bodies are cut with a cut-out for the bag bottom and this piece is then used as the pocket for the front. The straps are cut on the full width of the fabric, joined end to end and sewn onto the bag to wrap the full length for extra durability. Volunteers sew up the bags for us and we sell them in our shop for $5 each.

From time to time, we have fabric that doesn’t sell or the pattern design is a bit out of date so, we use this fabric to create our “Zero Bags”. No only does this strengthen our mission to divert textiles from the landfill, we are creating something useful that will last for years.

We invited a few new sewers from our recent sewing workshops together with a few new volunteers to come and help us sew up some Zero Bags. We had such a good time, sewing bags and making new friends. We’ll be sure to hold more Sewing Bees in the future!

Happy zero-waste sewing everyone!

If you would like to attend our next Zero Tote Sewing Bee (date TBD) please complete this form to let us know you’re interested. We’ll be in touch when the next event is scheduled.

Hi folks,
Guess what…summer has finally arrived in beautiful Vancouver – YIPPEE! We so are grateful to all you wonderful folks who have donated fabric and sewing supplies to Our Social Fabric. We are fully stocked and look forward to welcoming you all to our Sale Event this Sunday, June 23rd at 10:00 am. Quilt Samples
It’s hard to describe the wonderfulness of this donation – imagine tables full of quilts in soft cottons in contemporary and vintage designs just waiting to be fondled. These quilt pieces are samples that have been cut from full size quilts and used for store displays or as samples for retail buyers. Check out this photo of the super-cute shopping bag made from one of the smaller pieces.  The raw edges have been finished with extra wide bias tape and the straps are sewn all the way around the bag for extra strength. The quilt pieces come in a variety of colours and patterns – great for making bags, oven mitts and potholders, slippers, place mats, throw pillows, diaper bags, lunch bags, baby blankets and so much more. Be sure to get to the Sale early for best selection.

New Active Wear Lycra
New designs just arrived from a local sports wear designer this week. This lycra active wear has excellent 4-way stretch, great for leggings, tank tops, shorts, t-shirts and court skirts (see picture for some of the styles available.) Look for bins at the front display table.

Merino Wool Knit
We have a one bin of Merino Wool Knit pieces in short lengths (approx half meter) available in burgundy and deep green. Limit 2 pieces per customer.

OSF Sale – Thursday, June 13, 2pm-8pm

Hi folks,
Your favourite textile recycling shop will be open this week – we look forward to seeing you at our Sale Event on Thursday, June 13th at 2:00pm.

 Versatile Lycra
One of our favourite fabrics in the Shop and available in a variety of weights and colours is the ever versatile Lycra. Check out the capri length leggings we made in a rainbow of colours and the black leggings in the Shop on our man-mannequin – guys love leggings for working out, biking and just lounging around too! The heavier weight lycra is perfect for active wear and play-time for all the family. If you would like to try your hand at making the ever popular leggings, register for our sewing workshop “Pattern Drafting and Sewing – Capri Leggings“. You’ll learn how to adjust a pattern to your body type and cut out and sew a pair of capri-length leggings. You’ll leave with a custom pattern so you can make tons more at home (imagine summer shorts, knee-high work outs, casual capris and full length for the Fall and slipping into boots) Click HERE to visit our Workshops page for full descriptions and to register.

Attention Costume-Makers!
A fabulous donation came in last week from a costume designer/maker so we have lots of costume patterns – all uncut and priced at $1 each. Lots of beads in different sizes, beading supplies, rolls and rolls of ribbon in narrow to wide widths, glitter, feathers, rolls of sequins and stretch sequins. A table full of goodies!

Denim-Look Knit
Hiding in our storage area was this delightful bolt of denim-looking knit. I made a long-sleeved hoodie and some white shorts for a nautical look (you know, for when I’m out sailing around on my yacht!) It sews up beautifully with a soft brushed inner lining for those cool summer nights. Couldn’t resist making a matching pouch with a vintage doily.

Cream-Cotton Knit
100% cotton tube knit – super soft but with enough body for a tunic top or baby romper. This knit comes in a tube shape measuring 70cm across (140cm open). This would make a really nice summer sweater for guys or gals!

Quilting Books – 50% OFF!
We’ve pulled out our old stock of quilting books (’cause we got a whole bunch more!) and knocked the price down by 50%. Find the sale books in the Wovens section
AND the Spring Blow-Out Sale continues with fabric bundles reduced to 50% OFF – down the centre aisle.

Other Tid Bits
Stacks of 100% White Cotton Twill pieces and a few bags of Muslin will be available.

Thank you everyone for your continued support of Our Social Fabric  – this little non-profit organization is here because you believe that keeping textiles out of the landfill and into the hands of creatives, is important. So, thank you from all of us at OSF! We look forward to seeing you on Thursday! Don’t forget to check out our two new sewing classes: Sewing with a Pattern and Pattern Drafting and Sewing – Capri Leggings.
