Face Masks and Surgical Caps

Hello everyone,

We have received many request to provide information about sewing Facial Masks and Surgical Caps for our Care Workers as they battle the COVID-19 virus. At the moment we are respecting the directive by government and health care professionals to observe social distancing and so our OSF shop remains closed for now. We know that you all have substantial fabric stashes at home and we know that you want to help. We realize that it’s hard to know what to do and how to get it to the right place so we’ve put together a few suggestions for sewers who would like to contribute.

There is a need for Surgical Caps and we have folks who will pick up from a location in North Vancouver and deliver the caps. Here’s a photo of a cap that I made last night following a YouTube video. There are only two pattern pieces and the cap goes together really quickly using quilting cotton scraps. The video also has links to pattern pieces or you can purchase the pattern from the lady who designed the pattern ($10 US). There will be an on-going demand for these caps at both hospitals so let us know if you can sew some and drop off finished caps in North Vancouver. Click HERE for drop-off locations.

The next need is for Fitted Face Masks as the supply of manufactured masks, that effectively stop the transmission of the virus, are running out. I have asked Vancouver Coastal Health if they could use fabric masks and they responded that the masks need to be disposable. So, from what we have been researching, home-made masks DO NOT provide the necessary droplet barrier that is needed against COVID-19. However, there are some situations where a cotton mask may be adequate (internet sources suggest the benefits of a non woven bonded interfacing between the cotton layers). Our Colleen has been testing out mask designs and has made a fitted one (see photo) which she says is really comfortable. The mask has only one pattern piece and here is the instructional video The “Fitted Mask” was made using quilting cotton scraps for the outside and a muslin fabric for the lining but you can use whatever soft woven fabric you have in your stash. In order to make the mask more resistant to droplets, a layer of bonded interfacing was placed in between the cotton layers. When applying masks to your face, ensure that your hands are scrupulously clean and wash hands and masks well after each use! If you are making these types of masks, please reach out to your local health care workers to see IF they are needed and WHERE they are needed the most. At the moment, we don’t have a pick-up / drop-off system in place for the Fitted Masks.

There is a high demand for these Pleated Face Masks. Warning – these masks will not prevent you from acquiring the COVID-19 virus but may help to slow the spread with proper use. Wash and sterilize masks between uses and add a non-woven interfacing between layers. When applying masks to your face, ensure that your hands are scrupulously clean and wash hands and masks well after each use! Here are a few resources for pleated masks:
1. Bias Tape Pleated Face Mask

2. Pleated Face Mask  (6″ X 9″)

3. Pleated Face Mask (7″ X 9″)

This is a great way to use up your scrap quilting cottons! We currently have three locations where the completed masks can be dropped off. Click HERE for drop-off locations.

We hope this information has been helpful and will keep those sewing machines singing!

If you are looking for supplies to make masks for family and friends, check our our new Online Shop. Thank you all for your continued support! Keep safe and we look forward to seeing you all again in the near future.

Announcement from OSF Re: COVID-19

Hello everyone,

The month of March has been a turbulent one and the world is coming to terms with the impact and spread of the COVID-19 virus. Our Social Fabric is following the guidelines as set out by the Government of Canada’s recent posting on “Risk-informed decision-making for mass gatherings during COVID-19 global outbreak“. We have cancelled all sewing workshops for the month of March together with the Sale Event scheduled for March 29th. We regret any inconvenience but it is absolutely necessary for us to exercise social distancing now and take the necessary precautions to slow the spread of the virus.

Please check our website and our social media platforms for updates. We will continue to accept your donations of fabric and sewing related supplies – please e-mail our Donations Coordinator (osfdonations@gmail.com) to book a drop-off time.

Thank you all for your continued support!

Who doesn’t need a cozy hoodie made from fabulous hoodie  fabrics at OSF!  This is a great two lesson course suitable for male and female students. The course is designed to teach you how to sew with knits while attaching a hood, sleeves, and pockets on knit fabrics.  You will feel confident with the new techniques learned during this course and become a fearless knit expert. Click here to register for the Hoodie Workshop.

OSF Sale – Sunday, Jan 26, 10am-1pm

Hello everyone,

Our Social Fabric is ready to open its doors for another Sale Event this Sunday, January 26th from 10am to 1:00 pm. Never mind the rain, come inside and fondle fabric with us!

COTTON HOODIE FLEECE
We still have a healthy stock of Cotton Hoodie Fleece so, if you missed the last sale, come and see the wide assortment of weights, weaves and colours that we have in store for you. This all natural soft fleece is perfect for hoodies, lap blankets, cozy coats and cushions and the coordinating t-shirt jersey knits are super made into tops for the whole family. Colours are all coordinated so you can make hoodies with rib knit cuffs and bottom bands. Our Hoodie Workshop started this week and everyone was having fun making their own patterns and sewing up hoodies with Tanja, our new instructor. We’ll be offering another Hoodie Workshop in April, if you’d like to be added to the wait list, please send an e-mail to oursocialfabric@gmail.com.

WHITE COTTON JERSEY T-SHIRT KNIT
Cotton knits are so wonderful to wear next to your skin but some folks do like a bit of colour! So we experimented with dying this lovely fabric and it dyes really well – you can do a mottled effect by scrunching the fabric or create soft ombres with a gradual dipping technique. See what you can create with our Ozycraft dyes and 100% cotton jersey knit. Maybe get a head start on a few summer t-shirts or shorts.

QUILTING COTTONS AND MUSLIN
Lots more quilting cottons and muslin in stock (squares, strips and remnants) for all your crafting and sewing projects

CANVAS STRIPS
We received an interesting donation of charcoal coloured, water repellent canvas strips measuring 4.5 meters long by 24 cm wide. These strips are water repellent and would make great sturdy tote bags and tent pole bags (priced to sell!) Looking forward to seeing all of you this Sunday at Our Social Fabric – Vancouver’s only non-profit textile recycling initiative.

WHAT’S COMING UP?

We’re working on our list of workshops for March and April and hope to have them announced on Facebook and Instagram soon.
