Hi folks, Sunday’s coming and it’s a good day to shop for some beautiful fabric! We look forward to seeing you – the weather prediction is for sunshine!

Cashmere Blend Wool 
OMG! we received a few bolts of the softest cashmere blend wool coating and we can’t wait to share it with you. Available in black and navy blue. The designer who donated this fabric specialized in men’s wear so, we also have some Italian Tropical weight Wool Suiting (155 cm wide) in navy with pale stripe, gray (flannel style) and black. These high-end imported fabrics are smooth and subtle to the touch yet firm enough for a suit jacket. Watch Instagram posts for pictures over the next few days.

Natural Knits
So many beautiful, natural knits: Modal Cashmere Jersey, Rayon Cashmere Jersey, Organic Cotton knit and regular cotton knits. Something for everyone!

Natural Wovens
Come and see what we have down the centre aisle in the Shop –  4 tables filled with natural woven fabrics, cottons, wool, linen, silk and rayon blends. A wide variety of textures, patterns and styles to choose from.

Teddy Bear Fur
Lovely donation from a lady who made teddy bears – a rack full of natural fiber bear fur and some synthetic pieces in a rainbow of colours.

FREE “Repair your Wear” Workshop this Sunday, February 24th at 10:30 am.  In this hands-on, clothing fix-it workshop, you will learn easy methods to repair your garments, helping you to save money, extend the life of your favourite garments and you’ll be keeping textiles out of the landfill! Depending on the time available, you will learn to sew on buttons, repair frayed cuffs, hemming methods, adding patches, re-stitching and re-enforcing open seams, darning (hand and machine), replacing broken zippers, repairing pocket holes and decorative applique or embroidery to conceal holes and tears. “Repair Your Wear” Workshop

Sorry, this workshop is now full.

Our new FREE  “Repair your Wear” workshop will give you the skills to repair your gently loved garments, saving you time and money.

In this hands-on, clothing fix-it workshop, you will learn easy methods to repair your garments. Repairing your clothes will help you save money, extend the life of your favourite garments and you’ll be keeping textiles out of the landfill!   • Bring two garments in need of repair (broken zipper, fallen hem, missing buttons etc)
  • Equipment/Supplies: Regular sewing thread and hand-sewing needles, small sewing scissors, buttons, zipper, bias tape or whatever you might need to repair your garments. Also bring a measuring tape and straight pins. (Optional: embroidery floss in colours of your choosing)

Faux Suede

We’ve received a few bolts of black and cream Faux Suede from a designer who creates items for the equestrian community. The fabric is soft, subtle yet strong— soft enough for a light weight jacket or trousers and stable enough for zipper bags and totes. Large tote  pattern is from McCalls #5487.

Home Décor Designer Samples

Look what you can do with home décor designer samples! They’re great for creating patchwork clothing—look at these amazing trousers—all done with sample pieces and scraps. Wouldn’t you love an evening coat with blacks, purples and cranberry—Yum! We also have a few Pouf Kits left, ready for you to create your very own designer Pouf. Designer sample pieces are priced at $1ea, 2 for $1, and 4 for $1.

Everyone needs a little red in their life, how about a slinky Italian Spandex number to celebrate Valentine’s Day! Also, check out our little red dress in the shop, made from that amazingly versatile Lycra.

Home Décor Designer Samples

Oh my! If you thought we had so many beautiful home décor samples at the last sale, we’re happy to announce that we received another truck load of scrumptious samples for you. Many of you took home the Pouf making kit from the last sale and picked up coordinating designer samples.  You told us how much fun it was to make the Pouf and what a way to use up all those small remnants—it’s a real scrap-busting project!  On Thursday evening this week, eight students enjoyed our Pouf Making workshop with Denise and left with a new Custom-Designed Pouf! We’ll have more kits for you on Sunday and racks and racks of home decor samples priced at $1ea, 2 for $1, and 4 for $1. Pieces can be combined to create one-of-a-kind bags, luxurious cushions or our scrap-busting Pouf.

Quilting Cottons and Naturals

Another large donation has arrived and our bins are filled with quilting cotton pieces for you together with coordinating packages of quilting remnants.  There are quilting patterns in the book section and new quilting books in the Wovens section.

 

Fun Fur

Attention costume makers and soft creature creators —we have a large selection of really nice quality fun fur. Great for kids costumes, snuggle bears and toss cushions and beds for your favourite dog or cat.

POUF Making Workshop

Learn how to make this charming Pouf / Foot Stool—you will be amazed how easily it goes together.

Date: Thursday, January 24, 4:00 – 8:00 pm
(one session 4 hrs)

  • Instructor: Denise Jones Chu, Hello Beautiful
  • Skills: Student will have some general sewing experience
  • Equipment/Supplies: Bring your own basic sewing kit (scissors, seam ripper, measuring tape, straight pins, we also have supplies in the workshop area)
  • Domestic sewing machines will be provided in the OSF Shop. Students are welcome to bring their own sewing machine to the class, if they prefer.
  • Cost: $55 registration fee includes:
  • All pattern pieces
  • Instruction for assembling the Pouf, creating the bias tape and piping, inserting the zipper closure, creating the inner bag liner and drawstring toggle closure
  • Cording for piping around the top and bottom of the Pouf
  • 22” Zipper for bottom closure
  • Fabric for inner bag liner and for the base of the Pouf
  • Drawstring and toggle stop for the inner bag liner
  • Students may bring their own fabric for the cover or choose from a huge selection of designer sample pieces in coordinating colours and patterns in the OSF Shop.
  • Class size is limited to 8 students.

OSF Sale Jan 10, 2019, 2-8pm

Hi everyone—Happy New Year from all of us at Our Social Fabric. We’ve missed you! Hope you all had a wonderful Christmas and were blessed with the company of family and friends. Donations have been pouring in so, we have lots to share with you at our next Sale Event on Thursday, January 10, 2-8pm.

Home Décor Designer Samples
Oh my! We have racks and racks of scrumptious designer samples priced at $1ea, 2 for $1, and 4 for $1. Pieces can be combined to create textured bags, luxurious cushions or, if you love quilting and piecing, try making a pouf/foot stool like the one in the photo. This pouf is stuffed with fabric scraps, old curtains and worn out t-shirts! Now that’s what I call recycling!

Quilting Cottons and Naturals
We’ve received  bins of quilting cottons (lots of contemporary designs), pieces of batik and some wool. We know how much you all love those natural fibers! You can find these down the centre aisle with all the Naturals.

Knits, Lycra and Power Mesh
Lots of synthetic and natural knits available. Medium and light weight lycra also available in many colours including charcoal, cream, brown, plum and dark purple—this fabric is great for active wear, leggings, jackets, tanks—so versatile and comfy. Stretchy Power Mesh also available in hot pink, dark purple and turquoise. Great additions for your active wear wardrobe and as semi-transparent accents in leggings and tops.

Sewing Class
We are offering a Pattern Drafting and Sewing from Ready to Wear” class next Thursday, January 10, from 4 to 8:00pm. Students will create a pattern from a ready-to-wear knit garment of their choosing and then use the pattern to cut out and sew a garment. “Yarn Barn” Yarn
Knitters will remember the little shop in Edgemont Village called the Yarn Bar—well, it closed a while back and the stock was donated to OSF—so, all you knitters, weavers and crochet folks out there, we have buckets of wool, cotton and acrylic yarn to keep your needles clicking well into 2019!

Quilting Cottons
A lovely donation this week of quilting cottons—just in time for stocking stuffers and hand-made gifts. Why not make some eco-friendly gifts this year like wine bottle bags, food saver wax wraps, utensil holders, zipper bags and totes—someone will love them :)

“Stuffie” Stuffing
More poly stuffing has arrived—just in time for all those stuffie creature projects for the little people in your life. And stuffies make great donations for the North Shore Neighbourhood House, the Vancouver Rape Relief and Women’s Shelter, the Christmas Bureau, the BC Children’s Hospital and the Empty Stocking Fund (you can find lots more giving options on the web).

Muslin
Our wonderful volunteers managed to package up the rest of the muslin and we’ll have it ready for you on Sunday. Some packages have square pieces and other larger bags will have strips and pieces—great for art projects like sculptural draping, weaving and rope making!

Still have some vinyl left, natural knits, that amazing lycra that can transform into anything, and Christmas prints. Planning on doing some re-decorating over the holiday break?
