OSF Zero Tote Sewing Bee, July 13, 2019

At Our Social Fabric, we believe in living and working sustainably. A few years ago a few of us got together to design a tote bag that would be cut and sewn without (or very little) fabric waste. Our “Zero Bag” bodies are cut with a cut-out for the bag bottom and this piece is then used as the pocket for the front. The straps are cut on the full width of the fabric, joined end to end and sewn onto the bag to wrap the full length for extra durability. Volunteers sew up the bags for us and we sell them in our shop for $5 each.

From time to time, we have fabric that doesn’t sell or the pattern design is a bit out of date so, we use this fabric to create our “Zero Bags”. No only does this strengthen our mission to divert textiles from the landfill, we are creating something useful that will last for years.

We invited a few new sewers from our recent sewing workshops together with a few new volunteers to come and help us sew up some Zero Bags. We had such a good time, sewing bags and making new friends. We’ll be sure to hold more Sewing Bees in the future!

Happy zero-waste sewing everyone!

If you would like to attend our next Zero Tote Sewing Bee (date TBD) please complete this form to let us know you’re interested. We’ll be in touch when the next event is scheduled.
